Fan Art: Cyclops

Finally found my stylus after several days of searching (it had fallen in between two notebooks in a spot I swear I checked 13 times).

Anyway, a few months ago I spent my off time between calls trying to write an X-Men movie in my head. My first idea was that they would end up in the Savage Land for some reason. Then Cyclops would fight a dinosaur for some reason. Some other stuff would happen and then the movie would end. Pretty great right?

Green Arrow Fan Art

Have some Green Arrow too! Not lame, beardless, Batman-wannabe, CW Arrow. Real, comic book Green Arrow!

Oliver Queen is a personal favorite as super-heroes go and is definitely in the Top 3 for DC characters.
I need to stop trying to add cityscapes in the background of my quick sketches because then they never get done. I wanted to add more detail to the buildings but after about 3 days of coloring and inking sporadically I remembered that I have an actual comic I'm supposed to be working on.

Guardian of The Universe / Sinestro Redesign

I visited my family recently and played Injustice for all of 15 minutes. I've been in a DC mood the last 2 weeks as a result. So here.

The Guardians of the Universe have always had a neat look to them and are a great element of the Green Lantern mythos. Meanwhile, Sinestro is a villain that I have a weird affection for, mostly because of his name and Snidely Whiplash mustache.
I wanted to play with costumes a bit here. The Guardians usually wear something like a judge's robes, not necessarily "cool" but very iconic and relevant to their role as galactic peacekeepers. I tried to keep some of that while also referencing a Green Lantern uniform.

Sinestro is a rogue Green Lantern who tried to set up a regime on his homeworld. Given that "order through fear" has kind of become his theme I redesigned his costume with an SS uniform in mind (my original attempt was a little too on the nose and I had to scale it back). There are also elements of his modern and silver age costumes in there.

Seeking Sanctuary # 15 This Bodes Poorly

So here we are, finally in the Cold Woods for real. #15 is the first page of Seeking Sanctuary that I did with the tablet/stylus. I think everything looks much cleaner now.

Seeking Sanctuary #14 The Forest Path

And here is # 14. Pretty self explanatory, but I'm rather fond of old # 14. These first few pages have been sitting on my computer for months, maybe even a year. As someone who starts a lot of projects that never get finished it's nice to actually have my first "issue" all wrapped up, humble as it is.
Plus, now that we're through with all that boring expository stuff about establishing character and tone we can finally get to the fun part! Aren't you excited? Ready to go?

LOT: Heatwave

#3 in my Legends of Tomorrow Favorites List. At this point it's pretty clear that all the characters I like most are canonically the least charming members of the team. Mick Rory aka Heatwave is a pyromaniac and career criminal, the gruff thug to Captain Cold's smooth talking rogue. Mick joins the team because Cold said it was a good idea and because it offers the opportunity to go new places and steal new things. He is up for anything and 100% OK with many of the less heroic actions the Legends have to take on their mission (theft, kidnapping, attempted assassination, and just general violence). However, his aggressive, unpredictable behavior can make him a liability, particularly with something as sensitive as Time Travel.

Like Rip, Mick costume is very earth tone and practical but I particularly love his bulky, shapeless jacket which I assume is flame retardant. The design and shape of the Heat Gun is also something I always found interesting. It's more low tech than the Cold Gun, basically a handheld flamethrower.
The original idea was for Mick to be snarling and shooting the heat gun out at the viewer but it's always been interesting how low-key the actor chooses to play such a violent, hot-tempered  character. So I went with him staring into his own flame, something quite but intense and kind of scary.

LOT: Firestorm

More Legends of Tomorrow stuff. This time Firestorm: equal parts Martin Stein and Jefferson Jackson. The show gives the two of them this neat little "High-Five of Power" that sounds corny but actually looks pretty cool on screen. Stein is another of my favorites on the show. While he can come across as a stuffy, arrogant, intellectual he has a strong moral center that is tempered by experience and a rational, analytical mind.
Jax took me a little longer to warm up to but I think over the course of two seasons his character has really developed well, from "Tag Along Kid" to valued team member. He's the ship's mechanic, as well as the physical half of Firestorm. Strong willed and blunt but very team oriented he's the perfect counterpart to Stein.

The Firestorm costume is hard to draw and anyway they only wear it when they are fused. So I put them in slightly unoriginal street clothes. I went mostly from memory and while I think I got Stein right, Jax looks a little 1950's "Aw Shucks!" to me. It seems like he only had the ear stud in one promotional image but I added it to try and counter that.

LOT: Rip Hunter: Master of Time

Legends of Tomorrow is easily my favorite of the DC/CW shows right now and Captain Rip Hunter is easily my favorite character. After finishing the season finale several weeks ago I decided to do some sketches.
I love Rip because he leads the team less through authority or charisma and more through skill... and the fact that he's the only one who knows how to fly the Timeship. Despite being a prickly, precise, and meticulous person, Rip is also surprising good at improvising and often ends up flying through time by the seat of his pants. As such I felt a sense of danger and frantic movement appropriate for the character.
His costume is great(and easy to draw). Despite being a member of what is essentially the Time Police, Rip doesn't wear a uniform and always struck me as having the skills and personality of a spy rather than a cop. That's why I love how non-descript his costume is while still retaining elements that say, travel, mystery, and adventure. Notably the trench coat(staple of a Wanderer type character) and the futuristic laser pistol based on an Old West style six-shooter.

Hero Diner #3

It was just a phase, okay?
This one is a little special because it's the first time I've inked a comic with my new tablet. I think it looks a lot cleaner and it should speed up the process quite a bit...once I get the hang of it.

Seeking Sanctuary # 7 The Traveler's Lament

Dragon Rider

Any time I want to draw but can't think of anything I just draw dragons. Not much story to this. Just a dragon and a rider. To try and make the dragon distinctive I gave an armored, turtle-like hide.

Seeking Sanctuary #6 Payment Pending

So, yeah in terms of faces this is the worst of the pages. I forget what the issue was but I tried something new with this one too and it didn't work out. The bright side is I'm pretty sure things get better from this point on.

Character Designs

Another something from the portfolio I ended up doing nothing with. The idea was to create three characters on the fly for what I was imagining would be a kids cartoon show. We have a lovable but dense hero, a creepy evil guy, and a weird animal sidekick.
I may or may not have been watching episodes of He-Man when I did this.

Seeking Sanctuarty #5 Bargaining Skills

So here we learn a little bit more about Wisper. This is another weird one where something went wrong with the art. I think I was trying out different pens when inking and used the wrong one.

Beam Me Up, Baby

Just something I did for a freelance portfolio that never really went anywhere. I really like it though. Just a Star Trek inspired space Captain and her robot crew member.

Seeking Sanctuary #3 It's A Living

Seeking Sanctuary #2 A Serious Business

Seeking Sanctuary #1 Beginning to Suspect...

This is Seeking Sanctuary. Originally it had it's own website but for now it lives here. Seeking Sanctuary is a Fantasy/ Adventure about a guy on a quest. You'll learn more as the story progresses.
The first 14 pages are done and I will post them sporadically while I work on other projects.

There are some art problems with these comics. Bare in mind my technical skills are still developing and most of these pages are almost a year old. In this one I blurred the image too much in an attempt to clean it up a little and accidently deleted my only back up.

DA2: Drinks at the Hanged Man

My "cannon" Hawke is a female 2-Handed Warrior. In my head she's a Noble Outlaw/ Robin Hood kind of character, so I picked companions who I thought meshed well with that. I also wanted a more intimate feeling for this one, as opposed to the Origins one which was about Adventuring.

The Champion Armor for Warriors looks like a spiky turtle shell and I can't figure out if I love it or hate it. I think the asymmetry of the Mage armor works for Hawke better though so I added that element and got a look I really liked.

Otherwise the companion armors are relatively unchanged in this one. I think DA2 did a really good job of designing iconic looks for each of the characters, to the point where I felt tweaking the looks would gain nothing and make the characters harder to recognize. It helps that the armors were also pretty straightforward and easy to draw.

The relationship between the Hawke siblings is great either way so I knew I wanted to include either Carver or Bethany. Varric also seemed like a logical choice considering how he's a constant throughout the story.

From the start I knew I wanted to include Sebastian because I like the guy and it seems like some fans try to write him out of the story or see him as not "really" being part of the group. I won't tell others how to play but in my games Hawke and Sebastian are tight.

Hero Diner #2

A legend in the making, no doubt. Second issue of Hero Diner. Still working on a better title.

Hero Diner #1

Don't have a name for this yet. Just a tentative series of short comics based around a diner for super heroes. Enjoy.
